History

The UP School of Labor and Industrial Relations Student Council (SOLAIR SC) traces its roots from the UP Industrial Relations Society (UP IRS), which was the most active student organization in the college during the previous years.

As an academic organization, the UP IRS became the home for many students of UP SOLAIR. It hosted significant programs geared towards the academic and social development of the students. Being the only student-run organization at that time, its officers were primarily designated as the college’s student council officers. Membership in this organization becomes automatic as long as the student is currently enrolled in the college.

There were calls to formally institutionalize a UP SOLAIR Student Council that will officially represent the students of UP SOLAIR. After gaining support from the council and the college administration, together with some volunteer students who acted as Electoral Board, a general election was held last March 8, 2008 which was participated by the college student population. This election determined the group of students who will eventually become the first officially-elected UP SOLAIR Student Council.

Presently, the UP SOLAIR Student Council AY 2008-2009, also the College’s Centennial Student Council in the UP’s Centennial Year, envisions significant milestones to help strengthen the active participation and involvement of the students in the various activities of the College, the UP Community and of the society. Among its major advocacies for this year would be the ratification of the Student Council Constitution, research and extension programs and dialogues. These are attuned to promote the council’s four pillars: academic excellence, promotion and awareness, work-school-life balance and social change.

UP SOLAIR SC for the Centennial

The UP School of Labor and Industrial Relations Student Council (SOLAIR SC) is the official student representative of the students of the college. Its objective is to ensure the active involvement in activities and advocacies that are significant to the students of the college and the university.

In line with the celebration of UP’s centennial year, the SOLAIR SC’s mission statement, “Isang konsehong nagbubuo, naglilingkod, nakikilahok at tumutugon sa hamon ng ika-100 taon,” vividly encapsulates the noble aspiration of the Student Council to deliver relevant and appropriate activities for the students. Congruent to this aspiration is to promote the council’s four (4) pillars, namely: academic excellence, promotion and awareness, work-school-life balance and social change. All the activities and advocacies of the council is geared to respond to these pillars.

Among this year’s general programs would include the finalization of the official UP SOLAIR SC Constitution, SOLAIR Students’ Research Congress, Scholarships hIR, IRis Scan, SOLAIR Volunt-IR, “IR-aise mo!”, and “Affa-IR Tayo.” Together with the support of the students and the college administration, these programs are hoped to provide more venues for increased student involvement in creating meaningful and progressive changes to the college, the university and the society.

The SOLAIR SC is among the first officially recognized graduate student council (together with the UP College of Law, Asian Center and National College of Public Administration and Governance) for this academic year. It has maintained its active membership in the League of College Councils (LCC), a group of all student councils in UP Diliman.
